WHAT IS CUBING?

Cubing is basically a tool used to check cognitive skills of an individual. A cube has six sides that gives an individual a chance to think about six different ways by just looking at one single thing in order to solve it. When we aim to score highest grades, we need to focus on each subject carefully because paying attention to only one or two subjects can never be enough to be a topper. Likewise, solving a cube requires your full undivided attention to its each side so that you may start brainstorming. This cubing is actually a good activity also known as Rubik’s cube to enhance cognitive skills.

WHO INVENTED RUBIK’S CUBE?

He was a professor Erno Rubik, from Hungary, who invented Rubik’s cube in 1974 as a teaching aid while teaching his students. That was the time when this cube became popular among people, especially young children. According to a report, it was estimated that over 350 million Rubik’s cubes were sold across the world.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A RUBIK’S CUBE?

Rubik’s cube is an interesting task for children and even adults which always gets started out of curiosity and ends up being their favorite hobby. Solving Rubik’s cube takes a lot of time and patience but it also benefits in various ways. Let’s know the benefits of solving Rubik’s cube:

  • Improving memory: Solving Rubik’s cube requires undivided attention, concentration and memorization of spatial patterns. This activity is started by one as fun but it takes serious form later. Once a person solves a Rubik’s cube, he/she probably remembers that pattern and tries to solve the cube again but this time with a time limit, accuracy and speed. It helps children improve their memory and learning ability.
  • Promoting problem solving abilities: Another benefit of Rubik’s cube is that a child learns to find various ways to reach the solution that improves his problem solving abilities. Solving a Rubik’s cube challenges a child’s intellect and makes him curious in order to solve it that actually works as his motivation. Rubik’s cube actually evokes curiosity and develops problem-solving skills.
  • Making an individual more calm and patient: Solving cube makes a child calm and patient because this activity isn’t an easy challenge. In fact, it takes time and sometimes takes too much time and lots of patience. When a cube solver takes this challenge seriously, he learns to wait, stay calm and keep patient while solving Rubik’s cube.
  • Keeping one’s mind active: Cube can never be solved if one is mentally inactive. Active mind is the topmost priority to solve cube problems and a child starts with this, he is more likely to pay all his attention towards it and he learns to focus on reaching the goal only by keeping his mind active all the time which helps him not only in solving cube but also in his studies.
  • Enhancing eye-hand coordination and reflexes: Solving Rubik’s cube requires not only presence of mind but it actually requires sharp memory, ability to focus on each side at a time, quick moves with proper eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity and understanding the color patterns. When a beginner becomes skilled in this activity, they tend to have sharper reflexes and incredible eye-hand coordination.
  • Enhancing concentration and focus: A lot of focus is required while solving a cube that is good for a child. The brain cells are constantly activated in order to identify the opportunities and win the game. This activity keeps a child focused on a goal until it is achieved.
  • Boosting cognitive skills: The major benefit of solving a Rubik’s cube is that it boosts a child’s cognitive skills. It, in fact, benefits the cognitive functionalities of a child’s mind.
  • Working as a stress buster: solving cube makes a person calm down when they feel stressed. Solving the cube needs full attention, concentration and focus so whoever solves the cube feels unable to think about stress while cubing.
  • RUBIK’S CUBE FOR KIDS

Rubik’s cube is an easy game to understand but on the other hand it has enough complexity that it requires a lot of attention and dexterity in the hands. Memory skills are also required while solving cube so that a child can remember each and every movement of the pieces. The complexity of cube activity forces a child to give themselves all just to solve this.

Rubik’s Cube is not just a fun activity but it also helps to enhance a kid’s brain power. It actually requires a lot of patience as well as time but it is worth the effort.

It is also kept in mind that with kids it is best to go from simple to complex so that an easy cube should be given which is 3*3. Initially a simple cube (3*3) is given to a child as a challenge and the level of the cube’s complexity is increased until he masters the previous one. A child may need a little assistance but once they learn on their own, they are more likely to solve next levels by themselves.

Solving cube teaches two major core for life which are:
  • Breaking down a complex problem into solvable parts
  • Keep Patience until you succeed.
  • A child learns various thing while playing with cube as they learn:
  • To keep patience,
  • To follow instructions,
  • To think differently over a single problem,
  • To become a problem solver,
  • To sort out things to complete the challenge,
  • To memorize things,
  • To use all their abilities to win the game,
  • To encourage themselves,
  • To improve their speed,
  • To enhance their cognitive skills,
  • To be mentally active all the time,
  • To keep the winning spirit high,
  • To think out of the box.
  • For kids it is better to start with a 3*3 cube so that they can enjoy their achievement in time without getting bored or frustrated. The level of difficulty can be increased later.

A Rubik’s cube is actually an interesting fun activity that puts the kids in a place where their brainstorming starts.
